Labor Day, a yearly celebration of workers and their achievements, was created during one of American labor history’s most gloomy episodes.
In the last period of the 18th century, at the zenith of industrialization in America, a vast majority of Americans worked 12-hour shifts, to fulfill their basic life necessities, without having a holiday. Even in states where there were restrictions, in those times, small kids aged from under seven years used to work in mines and mills, earning less than their peers earn.
People and immigrants were compelled to work in extremely unhealthy conditions that lack fresh air, sanitation, and any breaks. This makes the condition of the working-class poor. Manufacturing became the source of earning of workers during those times, it was a big shift from agriculture to industrialization.
Labor unions, which had first emerged around 1800, became more powerful and influential. They began organizing protests and marches to raise awareness against unhygienic working conditions and to pressure employers into renegotiating their working hours and salaries.
Due to the massive unrest that followed, to restore relations with American workers, the District of Columbia and all its territories declared Labor Day a legal holiday. It was signed into law by Grover Cleveland on June 28, 1894. The century has gone; to this day the Labor Day founder remains a mystery.
Labor Day has become a public celebration event in the USA, with festivals, BBQs, fireworks show, and many other activities. Among American citizens, particularly teens, toddlers, and young grownups, Labor Day marks the beginning of fall and the start of the academic year.
Labors have contributed a lot to history and continue to play an exceptional role in the development of the American nation. If we look at any country we see big roads, highways, buildings, schools, colleges, all built by laborers. It would not be wrong to say that we would not exist without labor. Every complex machinery, structure, and vehicle was once an idea but becomes a reality after the hard work of labor, which has played the role in turning our imagination into reality. Labor demands commitment.
It is not for those who are looking for shortcuts or immediate results. It is for those people who are ready to fail again and again, before finally succeeding. You cannot afford to make excuses, being lazy or complacent. Their belief in it and willingness to sacrifice the present is the reason they are willing to delay gratification.
